Why sneaky exercise is good for you

A recent study seems to suggest that vigorous exercise does help in burning fat, but it also increases appetite.  Apparently, our body has a tendency to maintain our current weight, whatever it might be.  The key is apparently to burn calories on the sly, without triggering the compensating appetite.
So – in addition to standing around a lot as suggested by the article, consider the following three ways of sneaking exercise into our day by marrying mini-workouts with every day tasks:

Start your day with your five-a-day

I’ve never liked vegetables.  Except tomatoes.  Except a tomato, technically, is not even  a vegetable.  Getting the five-odd servings a day has always been a struggle.  Frankly, I didn’t worry about it too much.  After all, I was fine, healthy, bounding with energy and all around feeling-goodness.

Don’t trust your memory

Keeping track of every item on your shopping, project and scheduling list in your head is a complete waste of your brain power.  Not to mention that awful sense of unease that you must be forgetting something …
Get it out of your head and into a single, trusted “inbox”. There only three requirements for a good inbox are:

It must be with you at all times
You always use it to accept input
You always refer to it (this is the difficult bit!)

The timer mashup

I love timers.  Something about knowing there is a finite number of minutes left appeals to my fickle inner child.  So, what can you do with a timer?
Fight procrastination: The procrastinators 10+2 hack from 43 Folders recommends setting your timer on a 10 + 2 round.  You work for 10 minutes, goof off for 2 minutes.
Boost productivity: Set the timer for a 15 or 30 minutes to focus on a task and commit to it completely till the timer goes off.  You’re only committing for 15 minutes.  Totally doable.  This also works …

The ultimate to-do list

Many years ago while in the middle of a mid-life crisis (I had them often in my early twenties), I decided to make a list.   The List.  It was essentially a to-do list on steroids.  Nowadays they come with pictures and are called vision boards.  But back then, I didn’t quite have that terminology available to me, so it was just A To-Do List.
